SPEAKERS

  • Prof. Jim Harding – a retired professor of justice studies at the University of Regina. He is a founding member of the Regina Group for a Non-Nuclear Society and was director of research for Prairie Justice Research at the University of Regina
  • Prof. Peter Russell, University of Toronto – constitutional context – Prof. Russell is one of Canada’s preeminent legal scholars and has written extensively on Canadian Constitutional law
  • Anders Bruun, legal counsel to the Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board (FCWB). Mr. Bruun has over twenty years of grain trade experience, and is a past counsel for the CWB. The FCWB led the fight to oppose Ottawa’s removal of barley from the CWB. In litigation led by their counsel Anders Bruun, the Friends were successful in having the Federal Court rule Ottawa acted illegally. As a result, barley was returned to the CWB on July 31, 2007.
  • Steven Shrybman, legal counsel with Sack Goldblatt Mitchell (SGM) is one of Canada’s leading public interest law firms. It has acted in some of the most significant litigations in Canada. SGM has spearheaded a number of ground-breaking cases involving the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, class action proceedings legislation and other statutes. Charter cases have involved health care, equality rights and labour and employment. SGM has been a consistent advocate for an individual’s right to freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the right to life, liberty and security of the person. It has acted as lead counsel, or co-lead-counsel, in some of the most important class actions in Canada. SGM lawyers are at the forefront of litigation aimed at enhancing civil society in Canada.
  • A panel of the farmer-elected Canadian Wheat Board Directors who were removed by Ottawa - standing up for farmers

Cost

2:00    When the majority is ignored we must act!  (Dismissed CWB Directors panel)

Former CWB Directors will reflect on the actions to save the CWB “Single Desk.”  Over the decade of elected Directors, there were many accomplishments these will also be highlighted.

3:00     M.P. Panel presentation (The Ottawa scene perspectives on the passage of Bill C-18)

A panel discussion involving opposition party members:  critiquing legislation is a fundamental part of the democratic process.  Opposition party members will provide insight into the workings of the opposition, the value of parliamentary committees, the role of interest groups such as the CWB Alliance and the challenges of “opposing” in the current session of parliament as illustrated with the passage of Bill C-18 through the House of Commons, senate, and the committees of parliament.

9:30     Challenging Bill C-18, – the right thing to do!  (Professor Peter Russell, professor emeritus of  Political Science University of Toronto)

Professor Russell’s address will be based on his article published in the Globe and Mail following the passage of Bill C-18.

10:30    Court Actions and next steps   (A panel discussion with Professor Russell and legal councils Anders Bruun and Steven Shrybman)

This will be a panel discussion involving lawyers handling the class actions that have been launched.  They will also address the successful court case where Federal Court judge Douglas Campbell ruled that Bill C-18 violated the CWB Act when Ottawa refused to hold a plebiscite.
